Rounds 1 & 2 Maple Valley Short
« on: October 05, 2008, 05:44:00 PM »
So the dust has settled on the first 2 rounds of the Clio Cup and aside from a few teething troubles with room allocations and a few people not getting invites (my appologies, we'll get you in next week) the first 2 rounds produced some really close racing, I heard that in one of the rooms tonight Bazza passed Cookie on the line to grab 6th place and the last points position at the end of the 25 lap feature race... and in my room yesterday I had Spiny glued to my back bumper for 17 laps before he finally was able to squeeze past me and go on for the victory... I ended up pushing a bit too hard to try and catch up and I nearly lost out to a fast catching Fndr who'd already tasted victory in the sprint race..

Race results and fastest lap for each room are below, The total Drivers points table is in the Drivers Standings Thread which will be updated as we go through the season...

That was a lot of fun, Pete.  I was closing pretty fast, but I think that's because you and Spiny were slowing each other down.  And congrats to all for some very clean racing.  No one took any damage in the first race in our room, and IIRC, the second was very close to that goal.  We just had one incident, I think?  Anyway, thanks to all, and I guess it's time to prep for next week!

Glad you enjoyed it Fndr... I think there were only a couple of minor racing incidents in the second race and how me and Spiny managed to survive running so close for so long im suprised the odds didn't catch us out... lol

Here's a few pics from the Feature race, including said door to door battle between me and Spiny

The gaggle of cars round the first turn at the start of the race..

Fluffster puts a wheel on the grass at the outside of turn 2 early on and spins across the track, narrowly avoided by Fndr..

On lap 9, Me and Spiny battle it out door mirror to door mirror at 100mph

And still going....

Somehow still going!!!

It was certainly some close racing, and as Fender said, very clean. Especially that first race where I think the whole room ended up with no damage apart from a bit of paint swapped between myself and Pete. I think the other competitors may have got fed up with the constant "On your left", "On your right" etc. ;D

in fact, I could hardly get rid of Pete the whole meeting. The first race we were nose to tail for the first 6 laps while Fender and Fluff ran away and hid. Second race, Pete got away in the lead and I was able to squeeze past Fluff (who by then was in a Spiny-Fender sandwich - see Pete's first photo). Then came the aforementioned 17 laps where the gap never got above 25 metres, and I never made a move stick apart from one on lap 6, which was promptly followed by me outbraking myself and letting Pete back in. Meanwhile, it sounded like Fluff in his battered Clio and Shery were having a bit of a battle for 5th too.

As for how we survived the racing, I think the bottom 3 pictures tell the story. Basically, both of us left the other driver at least a car width to fit in and with such equal cars we could take simialr lines without crossing.

Hm....the winner also had the fastest lap five of the six races.  Guess I should have driven just a little bit faster. lol

Lap times were pretty close for everyone really, I think most people had fastest laps around the mid to low 41's...

Is it too late to join in on this party?
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

After this one concludes, I could run a spec miata series.  It would be similar, just using the SM and (obviously) different tracks.  Probably more club ribbons, too.

Go ahead and build up the cars guys, you can't really join in the main Championship but we do get the cars out from time to time just for kicks too and you'd be more than welcome to join us for those...
