Driving with out ABS
« on: September 20, 2007, 12:16:25 PM »
Alright so I need some help with this, I am driving with a steering wheel and was wondering how to best start learning how to drive without ABS, what settings do you use, how do you drive a stock untunable car with out ABS, as it seams I can breath on the brake and it will lock up the wheels on most stock cars, what's the secret I am missing?

pressure setting helps. if you can't adjust it, you can put something physically behind your brake pedal to add resistance and feel

Always been a challenge for me too and I've used the wheel exclusively in FM2. A couple of options available are...
1) Add resistance to the pedal to increase 'feel'. You can search the FM forums fo discussions on methodologies if you want. Some people use sponges, some use squash balls and so on. I've never gotten around to any of this myself yet but, would like a firmer feel so, I may at some point.
2) There are adjustments available at the controller level. In the first menu of the game, select Options > Controllers. There are 'deadzone' options for the the steering, gas and brake. You can adjust the brake deadzone in what ever way gives you the feel you want for those un-tunable stock brake systems.
Personally, I chose to increase the deadzone at the beginning of the travel to something like 20% My thought was to try to allow more pedal throw before actual application. Others have adjusted theirs differently so, use what works for you!

There should still be a thread on the FM2 > racing techniques forum labled something like 'using the microsoft wheel' that has pages and pages on the subject if you're so inclined

for me sqaush ball works a treat.

1/2 squash ball behind the brake pedal - then go to the controller/wheel - advanced, and adjust the outer deadzone, to be where you want max pressure to be

the squash ball means, that you cant press all the way down, and increases resistence as you press.
i used a medium strengh ball, but i think harder might have been better, also doesnt have to be 1/2, you can use more or less, depending on how early you want to feel the pressure.

Yeah I have been meaning to tear into my pedals to see what can be done to stiffen them up, I have real bad habit of slamming the pedal to the floor very fast and need something to slow my pedal down a little. If you think about it, in a real car you have very little travel in the pedal but the resistance is so much that your having to work harder to make it move that little 1/4 of an inch it takes to lock them up, and I guess my biggest problem is lack of feedback, I just can't "feel" my brakes lock up.

yeah, i think theoretically, what you could do with the ball is set the inner deadzone for where you first 'touch' the ball, and the outer where your pressing as hard as you do when you really think you should lockup. - that way you would have very little travel, but when you did it would have resistence.

but i found setting the outer zone was the useful bit.

bear in mind though, even in a real car, even though there is resistence it doesnt stop you locking up - but at least we dont get flat spots in forza!

I went to the hardware store and got a stiffer spring large enough to fit around the spring already in the pedals.  By mistake I cut it a little short so there is a very small amount of throw before the pedal hits the stiffer spring.  I set the deadband to ignore this throw and it does feel much more like a brake pedal.

Well I decided to just go all in last night in the SpecForza series and ran the race with NO assists period, it was pretty dang fun, I decreased the outer dead zone for the brake to around 85% from the 70% I had it at before, and set the pressure to 55% and tried to take it easy on the brakes. I did surprisingly well, posting a 1.26.465 as my fastest lap around Laguna Seca, just 2 seconds off the pace from most of the guys, I didn't think I would do that good considering I usually run with ABS and Auto trans.

I still need a stiffer pedal though, so I think it's off to the sports store for some squishy balls of some sort.
