Sockmonkey Derby: Silverstone International--CLOSED
« on: July 26, 2008, 05:36:09 AM »
Well, folks, new challenge time:

This one is simple, unleash the sockmonkeys on Silverstone!

The Track: Silverstone International Circuit

The Cars:

Cobalt SS
Golf GTi Mk V
Eclipse GT

Specs: B Class, 300 hp limit.

Notes: That Eclipse is the unkown here...I haven't tested it. I don't even know if it is the right one. Drift mentioned it in the Sockmonkey thread. But this should be the top North American, European, and Asian performers.

Break out the wrenches and get to work :)

Okay, I'll be the initial target...

VW MkV GTI, B696, 296 HP: 86.740

The car is built with race intake and race cams plus the first level of weight reduction. The tune starting point is Ske's universal FF with some minor tweaks.

I had a nice 86.4xx run but then discovered I had 301 HP.

Eclipse GT, B691 298 HP: 86.305

Basically Ske's tune again, but with more spring front and rear.

just built up the Eclipse, using a rather extreme tune.

managed a 89.053 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT with a lot of room to improve.

I think these challenges will end up making me a better driver eventually.

hopefully.

Juan, the history of these cars is that we were looking for an easy driving, even powered group of cars that would make for some tight racing online. They really shine at bringing it all down to skill. So, yeah...you can really knock the rough edges off your techniques with theses.

Look for some online races this weekend using them...are you in my friend's list? It will be tons of fun.

Sometime before the end of the challenge I want to do an enduro on Maple Valley with them.

I'm gunna go try out the Cobalt SS to see how it stacks up with the rest of the cars.

I look forward to your time, snyder...I really want to see what the cobalt can do...with someone who isn't as rusty as me...LOL

My first time is one I set back when these were under development

Cobalt SS: 86.094 (that was a lightning strike lap, IIRC)

Add the Eclipse GT: 86.916

She seems to pull stronger than the Cobalt, I can pass my ghost in a couple of spots but the Cobalt has it on her in handling.

And the Golf: 86.462

Very nimble and quick in the corners...doesn't pull as strong as the other two.

The Cobalt should be quite a good car around this track, it's become one of my favorite B classers. The Golf is a bit trickier to set up but it's got a huge lump of low range torque which should help a lot around here (use few gears), and the Eclipse is new to me.

I'll start with the Eclipse... it's a very heavy car in this class (Unless you meant to include the Eclipse GTS) but we'll see what it can do ;)

Cobalt SS, B700, 297 HP: 86.026

Ske's tune again. This car felt heavy to me and I regularly slid off at turn 1. But it certainly can get up a head of steam!

Drove the GTI a while longer and got it down to 86.115. I prefer this car of the three, but the Mitsu isn't bad. I need to spend a bunch of time in its seat.

(I'm keeping a leaderboard spreadsheet up to date as we go. I'll post it in the early mornings.)

Allright, first times from a quick online session with BBQ-Pete and Dirt earlier today:

Eclipse: 85.149, was on for 84.8

SRT4 (reference car): 85.199, was on for an 84.9

Both cars had less than optimal tunes, could probably gain those lost tenths if I manage to stabilize them.

Hm....I think I'll try the full width slicks and full WR approach.  For me, that was faster on the QR tracks, though Silverstone international has enough straights to reward the hp.
