June Challenge - Anniversary Special...CLOSED
« on: June 01, 2008, 08:20:28 AM »
We were sitting around the shop the other day, mostly yawning and trying not to watch ole Eph pick the paint boogers out of his nose.  All of the anniversary shinanigans going on over to the Daught GNet got us to kickin' around about how much has gone down in a year around here.  How much has changed.

I, for one, don't tune a car now any where near like I used to.  All the business about getting the Weight Bias dialed in, and then the SWR and the Tonka Numbers - the Princess and the Pea project brought a number of things to light and has had its affect on my tuning regimine as well.

It also occurred to me that my B Class Muscle Inc. cars (those that haven't been shuttled off to other classes) were seriously out of date as far as tuning regimines are concerned.

So, the challenge for this month - after a year with the game - is to resurrect the B Class cars and bring them up to speed with where you are now.   The tracks are the B Class Professional Series races.  The five race total will be one number for tracking as well as the individual race times.  You will note that the five tracks used in the B Class series include the QR tracks - we should be able to get a QR on a car as well.

And to fore-stall the enivitable question - this is a tuning challenge; one car, one tune per pass through the series.

There is a lot of work involved with this one so lets work it in a somewhat relaxed manner with the conclusion date open for the time being.

The Leaderboard will contain only the QR and Race Totals.  A Template will be provided for doing a full report in the individual posts.

Well, in the spirit of the challenge, I reckon it's right for me to go back to the beginning and dig out that Camaro SS. I wonder how well it will stack up after all this time (and how much, if any, improvement I can make ::) )

I was just going to PM you about this. Only I was thinking the first run at Maple Valley.  :D

Five whole races. What am I going to do with myself?

Ok, just so I have this correct.

I have a class B-700, 1970 Challenger setup.

Then all I have to do is run the stated tracks, by any means - free run, in race or whatever, and I record the best lap time in total seconds and report it here.

Also, I'm expected to run every track with the exact same tune on each without modification between tracks? Then afterward, if I want to change some stuff I can but then run all the tracks again with the new tune and so on...?

And finally I can run as many different cars as I want and report all the different times, if I so choose? Or I pick one car and go with it?

Mostly.  The B700, 1970 Challenger must have Sport (DOT) tires.  It may not have Race tires (slicks) or Street tires (Y-Rated) and especially not Stock (Strips of crappy rubber).

I also believe that, in this particular case, the challenge is to run the Professional B-class series, and record the total race times, best lap time, and total series time (total for all 5 races), all using the same car and tune.

Also, post up what you do with your car to put it where it is.  How'd you pick what parts to throw in? How'd you go about making it perform the way you wanted?  These bits aren't necessary, but everybody likes them, and you can learn from other people's tuning techniques.

This'll be my first real tuning challenge.  I entered the rallycross one, but did not put much time into it, especially not tuning.  Catching this one at the beginning will let me really go step by step and try to make a fast car.  I'm planning on running the Corvette ZR-1, because it is a beautiful car.  Tuning is going to start tomorrow.

By the way, is there a set end for this yet, or are we playing it by ear?  Just curious.  Summer classes start for me tomorrow, which is 4 days a week, 4 hours a day, plus homework, so I'll need to know how to ration my Forza time towards this.  Thanks!

Sorry to have seemingly posted and run - we had a bout of fairly serious weather here yesterday and things got shut down around here.  I hope my xBox is okay - the first electrical blip bounced the thing and it showed three quadrants of red...

All of the answers seem to be adequaitly answered.  Good job guys!

Well, we got all 11 of the cars trailored up and we're headed out to the track for the duration.  The Buck kid is all a flitter-pated.  He ain't had much to do while we been running the R cars...

;D $

Edit: I had a thought as I was starting up this morning - that being to rename my B MInc garage and start an new one.  Then after we have this going for a while compare my old tunes to my new ones.  That means I will be building cars from scratch for this...  fun fun fun!!

Fascination has seen a recent rehash so I'll start with her, my C3 'vette has been under scrutiny this past week with some friends so I think I'll start there and work my way into some new cars.  I still don't have a Boss or a Shelby in DOT trim, only GM cars.

Looks like I'll be building mostly from scratch here too Blooze.
Go sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

I never managed to get the B Class Vettes built out either, so I will be heading there after I get myself grounded with the Z28 (this extended period of racing R cars will no doubt have me plowing into walls and such for a little while...)

Looking forward to this one, I have a Pontiac GTO that was gifted to me as a B spec car in my first week online, I've not really driven it that much though and I think it will need some work first to fit in with the regs, have a feeling its a 'missile' build on stock tires..  :-[  (Please don't hurt me)

Also gonna have a go at building up a Cuda, just unlocked them in my game so will be a good chance to see what they are like too...

Since i've shut down the calculator site, i've been tuning purely by feel.  I've used my own cals for so long that I just kinda know about what the number should look like.  It's a kind of return to the basic test and test process.  I don't think it's an improvement over my prior calcs, but it's not too far off.  The rally challange was done without and calculators.

Everyone's tuning is getting an overhaul it seems.

You shut down the calc site and have abandoned the calculator?  I guess I've been away for a while.

Good to see you back TJN - it's been a while.

It looks like Blooze and Fit have been thinking along the same lines as me. I've pretty much decided that my first move is to run the Camaro in the build/tune noted down in my shop, then I'll have another go and see if it's the driver or car which has improved over the 9 months or so of this site ??? I have a feeling that the initial build will seem really understeery now, so it'll be interesting to see if that really does translate into slower times.

EDIT: Actually, scrap that - I'm going to run the earliest documented tune I have on this beast, which goes all the way back to the second ever Muscle Inc. challenge over on .net (I had to hunt a bit for this, and can't believe how time-oriented the first challenge was). Two things really stood out about this tune. Firstly, it's very soft (I think the sump must have doubled as a skid plate :D and secondly I can't get over how high the diff settings were. And that's before I looked at the bump settings being so close to the rebound settings. But, here she is, now hopefully to be much improved upon:

Upgrades:
Engine: Race Intake
Handling: Race Everything except Weight Reduction (Sport)
Wheels: BF Goodrich DOT, widest tyre, Centerline rim, stock size
Forza Rear Wing

Settings:
Tyres: 29 Front, 28 Rear
Gears: FD = 3.30, 1st = 2.82, 2nd = 1.98, 3rd = 1.51, 4th = 1.18, 5th = 0.96, 6th = 0.82
Cambre: 0.8 Front, 0.7 Rear
Toe: 0.1 Front, -0.1 Rear
Caster: 5.8
ARB: 9.99 Front, 5.98 Rear
Springs: 295.3 Front, 241.7 Rear, Ride Height 6.0 Front & Rear
Damping (Rebound): F = 5.9, R = 4.8 (Bump): F = 5.5, R = 4.6
Aero: 100 lbs rear
Braking: 50% bias, 100 % pressure
Diff: 70% Accel & Decel

There's no wonder I was sitting at about 3/4 of the way down the board on the first challenge looking at this. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I'm still going to give it a go as a comparison ::)

I know exactly what your talking about Spiny. I used the Boss with the tune from the first challenge a few months ago. It was unstable. Fast but unstable.

Funny thing was that when I updated the tune I was only 2 or 3 tenths faster.

I had my splurge at the end of the C Class challenge. I bought all M Inc. cars D through B and uprgraded them to class specs. That's right I have 3 of all of them. Even the Charger and Chevelle.

I might get down with them tonight. Depends on how much stamina I can muster. The whole series, with fast times. Blooze, you really did issue a challenge this time didn't you.
