LMMS Challenge: Mustangs Running Wild vs. Bimmers
« on: March 15, 2008, 01:05:48 AM »
Last Week at the House of Drift

Drift: Hey Herb. How are the Ecotecs coming? Dirt and Skunk are really pleased with the power and reliablity. It seems that they haven't been able to blow one up yet. Dirt's almost mad. He's the kind of person that could break an anvil. It's become personal I think.

Herb: That's good. We have a rep to keep. We aren't building Nitro motors here. But I'm getting bored. Now that everything is ironed out, there's nothing new to have to figure out. I need a challenge.

Krista: (walking in the clean room) That's good. I've got one right here. It seems we may have an undercover assignment. Its a letter from a Mr. C, Mr. S and Mr. TT. They seem to be interested in providing us with a substantial check for an equally huge tuning job. (Handing Drift the envelope)

Drift: Whooa its a check for a quarter mill. What's going on here. (reading) We are interested in seeing what a few certain cars can do in the hands of a skilled professional.

Herb: Maybe they should have sent it to Serial?

Drift: Ladies and Gentlemen exzip-it B.
(back to the letter) Enclosed is a check you should find that should cover your expenses and then some. This is not a public event. So keep a low profile.
The challenge is to see what these cars can do on a world class European track. We like the spirit of the Late Model Muscle Series so those rules will apply.

The cars are the Mustang GT, Shelby Mustang GT-500, Saleen S-281, and the SVT Mustang Cobra R. If you can get one, the Saleen S-281E is also legal as long as it can stay within the series rules.

The track is Nurburgring Nordschlef. The times set there are the World's Standards of performance cars. We want to see how they can stack up against the world, given the right tune. You have a week to Saturday, March 22.

Krista: It looks like its time for the marathon track. I just hope we can keep them together.

Herb: That shouldn't be a problem. Keeping them on the track, that may be another thing.

Chigger: (from the other side of the door) I think its time for the three B's. Brats, Beer, and Babes.

So the challenge is on
Nurburgring

SVT Mustang Cobra R
Mustang GT
Shelby Mustang GT-500 '07
Saleen S-281
Saleen S-281 E

Update:
BMW M3-GTR
BMW M3 E46
BMW M3 E92   the new one!

Cars must race on slick tires. There is no tire sponsor, so any brand you wish to choose. But must be slicks.
Cars must not have more than 600 horsepower. If your car is found to have more, expect penalties.

Today

Gary: Dang it Drift! You need to stay off the walls. I'm tired of having to put those graphics back on the cars. I got the car looking sweet and you wipe out the sides. It never fails.

Drift: Hey, this ain't a paint shop. This is a performance shop. Times are first. Looks are second.
(Gary walks off to cool down)

Krista: You know you got a two second penalty for that little run off on that last lap.

Drift: I know. Its just that the rest of it was really good. I'm still mad at myself for it. This track is unforgiving. one mistake and eight minutes to think about it to do another.

Krista: I don't get it. You should own this track. Its just like the roads back home.

Drift: I'm getting too tense. I don't want to hold back. But I would rather give up a few tenths than run off and lose ten seconds. Its just going to take laps and lots of them to get the whole track.
Any word on our mystery benefactors?

Krista: No. But I did recieve an e-mail saying that they would be coming to the track on Tuesday. I guess we'll find out then.

Drift: Hey. What was the time of the last lap anyways?

Herb: It was a 7:47.442 on the SVT Cobra R. I think we need to forget the adding of min-secs this week. I had to break down and find a calculator to do the math. Its only going to be at this track this time anyways.

Drift: I think that would be good. Let's see what the rest of the Muscle Inc. bunch thinks about it.

Krista: Wait. I thought they said discreet.

Drift: You're not the only one with e-mail. I sent one off and they said it was okay. As long as all of them kept the mouths shut. Besides, how many times have we snuck in while the OSS, BBB, or Spankey's shop were paying for track time? I sure they would love the opportunity to run such a legendary track.

In fact here they come now.

SVT Cobra R

SALEEN S281 = 7:47.563 (This time is a sitting duck for the likes of Serial....better get the lead out.)

...a bit slower than my Z....hmmmmm

TRACK NOTES
  • Car understeers a bit much for my taste through Turn 1 and 2.  By turn 27 and 38 the car...............LOL.  Who am I kidding, track notes at the Ring?  That ain't gonna happen.  But the car does need to be a bit more responsive on turn-in.....
  • LOVE THIS TRACK!!!

...LOL, scary close to Drift....

GT500 - 7:45.910

Track Notes
  • On paper there is no way this should be faster....but it feels much more comfortable to me - maybe because of the extra 350 lbs. she's carrying over the Saleen?
  • Got distracted by the pooch after 3/4 of the way through the lap and lost a couple of seconds.  Damn Dog.

MUSTANG GT - 7:45.293

Track Notes
  • Extra HP sure helps.  I seem to have hit a wall with my times.....Need to learn the track better....

I'll post the complete builds for these cars over at Smokey's on Monday.  The weekend is for racing - not writing.

Good times there Detrick.

But like the story said I had 2 sec of penalty time. So a 45 is what it really ran. I just ran out of time and couldn't get a clean lap. Full grip tune on the SVT. It only is hitting 167 at its fastest.

GT-500 time was its first lap. So it didn't have a full flying lap at the line. Left alot of time there.

Going to try again now.

This track is fun. But unforgiving.

Ah, this is a good challenge.  Hopefully I will be able to get a car into it.

It puts me in mind of the Ford GT commercial.

Be careful out there. I wrecked a lot of cars this morning while trying to get a Mustang GT below eight minutes. So there are glass, sheet metal, and turf bits scattered all over the place.

LOL - I can't (or have been unable to) break 8 minutes with a purpose built Audi S4.  I suspect attempting to do so with one of these 'Stangs is not going to meet with much success.

I told ole Willis to pack an extra container with fenders and quarter panels and such... I suspect they are going to be a consumable, much like oil and gas, on this venture...

Its looking like NY Minute kind of carnage out there ;) ;D

It's a rough track if you don't have it down. And even if you do have it down it just takes hitting one bump just a little bit off to shoot the car into understeer (and off track). I think that was the reason no one has picked it yet for a challenge. But it is about the best track to measure a cars performance if the section time markers are layed down right. It has all kinds of corners, elevation changes, rough surface, and long straights.

Now if I can attack it with out getting penalty time :D
