Well, I had a hard time using the apex cones as braking markers... I felt like I was way behind in the corners that way.  I think my problem is that I'm carrying too much speed into the left, and then when I make the right that leads to Chapel I either push and end up doing my turning somewhere between the cone wall and the rumble strip at Chapel, or a have to slow down a lot, which makes me early apex the final right... which absolutely kills my speed onto the Hanger straight.

It seems a similar problem to what I sometimes suffer at autocross: I get behind in my slaloms.  At autocross I try to apex the "back side" of the slalom cones, but here the crest on the last right-hander of Becketts is blind, and I have a really hard time apexing at the backside of it.

I burned down two sets of tires hot lapping tonight... I managed to find a few tweaks to my suspension to reduce understeer without making the car harder to drive.  I also fine-tuned my gears for the different engine mods I swapped in last night.  All told I managed to pull almost half a second off my time!  My new Grand Sport time is 1:53.341.  Hopefully more to come!  I think I can break into the 1:52's if I can nail this damn complex!

Thanks for the tips, guys.  I'm gonna keep working on it.  :)

I tore into my GS Vette and put it back together with downforce and slicks - things is looking up.  The 1:55.450 is my best ever on this track.  I've never run it very much and it shows.  Maybe it's time to pay the piper on this one and put in the laps...

Oh - I also set a new personal best on Maple Valley short with the GS - now ranked 401 on that track.  I like my new build paradigme...

Made my attempt at it...broke into the 1:52's with my Series 1 setup from the Road Atlanta challenge way back.  I'd call it a very stable car, with a solid rear end in it, pegged at exactly 400hp.  It's a joy to drive...there's a 1:51 to be had for sure in it as well.

i just ran the factory spec shelby series so i could get a series 1.
put slicks, aero, 1 step of weight reduction and all platform parts (except drive shaft and clutch i think) had to bump rim size to get that last PI  ;D .
did nothing with the motor. this thing with out touching the tune was almost too tight, of course i just did the whole series in a 65 shelby so...
anyway pulled a 1:55.553 after only 4 laps. need to go back and give it a tune. i like this one, very well may be my new a850 car.

Seating for Two: Part II

Silverstone, ALS practice session, radio communication...

Bert: Whoa, there, Boss. Is that why the call you Dirt Driver? Is you arm bothering you or...

DD: Hell, no! My arm is fine. Cutting the cast down took care of everything as long as the track officials do see it. I just got run off the road by some sportscar jockey!

Bert: That Datsun with the stickers all over it? What's he doing out here?

DD: Trying to wreck my damned car, that's what he is doing. Find his frequency!

Bert: Uh...yeah.

Technobear, visiting in the OldSchool Speedshop pit, speaks up...

Techno: That's not a Datsun. It's a Toyota GT 2000. The driver is Hoplee from the FCT garage. I keep my Type E over there. Here's his comm. This should be fun!

DD pulls into the pit...

Bert: Here's that guy's frequency, Dirt. His name is Hoplee. And that's not a Datsun. It's a...

DD: I don't give a whoot what it is. I know this guy. They call him the Tennesse Tuxedo or somethin' like that. He and I are about to have a little come to Jezus meetin.

on the radio...

DD: Hey you little dipstick! What the hell are you doing trying to pass me like that and putting me in the dirt? And what are you doing driving that sake rocket in an ALS practice session.

Hoplee: Ah, you must be that really old buy I just passed. I thought you were parked on the track you were going so slow! You're the one the call DirtDriver, right? LOL, now I know why.

DD: If I catch you you're gonna know a lot more than that!

Hoplee: Well, that seems to be the problem, now, doesn't it? You can't seem to catch my poor little ole vintage sports car with you fancy new two-seater, now can you.

DD: I am telling you for the last time, you get that piece of Japanese tin off the track. This is an ALS session!

Hoplee: Guess you didn't hear. The ALS rules committee invited us here to run along side you guys. The FCT cars are running against you!

DD: What the hell!

Hoplee: I'll bet you have a vein popping out of your forehead right now, don't you? We're here and we're racing in this one. You wanna fight about it?

Stay tuned...a short list of FCT cars qualified for the ALS challenge by special invitation will be posted soon.

I've been playing around with different builds of the Series 1 and have managed to get a time down of 1:54.013. I think I can go faster than this with a more consistent lap.

I've managed to get an A850 build with specs of 6.1/5.4/5.6/5.5 with 400hp & 323tq.

I'll run a few more laps tomorrow.

DD,

Can you add my time of 1:54.013 to the leaderboard?

There's really only one car that makes burnt oil and leather smell like perfume, and it isn't the 2000GT.  ;)

Alrighty, then. Seems the Track Officials at Silverstone wouldn't let us run ALS over here unless we made it an international event. The deal was inked before we even posted the challenge!

Here is the twist:

You are allowed to run the following FCT cars in ALS spec (A class, 400hp max) for this challenge. (This is a one-off event.)

Porsche 911 (73?)
Jaguar E Type
Ferrari Dino
Toyota 2000GT

Check the FCT Garage to get more info on these cars.

Hop says they'll whup us. Let's give em a run and see what they got!

As a quick primer:

73 911 Carrera RS-> German car named after a Mexican race. Well balanced car in A Class. I had no trouble keeping up with the ALS Muscle on Laguna Seca, even running only approx 320 horses. Not your typical oversteering 911.

Ferrari Dino-> Extremely well balanced car and your only option if you like them mid-engined. See alignment and suspension settings posted in FCT Garage for a start with this car.

Toyota 2000GT-> Long legs for such a small car. This thing will put up a decent top speed even if you skimp on power. It's a very forgiving chassis that behaves well in most conditions. If it's acting tail happy on you, stiffen the front sways, dampers and springs. This may very well be the fastest of the FCT cars and holds most of my lap records.

Jaguar E-Type-> ADVANCED STUDENTS ONLY This car has a rear-end that can only be decribed as 'possessed'. It's evil! Bonus points if you run this one without a wing!

Those look good times there. I'm sitting this one out because I only have one of the 3 unlocked. made me realise I need to spend more time progressing through career (currently on a massive 52%)   :'(

Are you on XBL? If so, I can send you one of your missing cars if you like.

No, that's been a big part of the problem. Got the bits together but it wouldn't connect. I need to find some free time (hopefully this weekend) and then I'll try and get it together. Thanks for the offer though - very kind of you. If I was going to do the cahllenge there's always the ZR-1 available, it was more a case of seeing that 2/3 locked made me realise hwo much I've been neglecing career recently.

Hopefully I'll get to race you soon,

Cheers

QUICK EDIT: Now that I've read the whoel thing it seems there's a 911 and 2000 GT sitting in the garage so I've set the boys on this. Looks like they're heading to the 911 first - this could get interesting. It's sponsored by the Blood Service so looks like I may be needing more than money from the sponsors before long  ;D

There goes another four hours on Silverstone!  :D

I think this is gonna be my sixth 911 Carrera?

Glad to see the new cars tossed in... I think I've plateau'ed with my Corvette, and if my Series 1 is faster I can't eek the speed out of it.  It's a frustrating beast to tune for me.  I'm curious if my 911 can match my Corvette... I think straightline speed is going to be a problem, but the car is going to absolutely gobble up the back section around Priory!
Don't make me go get my Bentley Hummer!

I know I said I wouldn't enter this, but I've still been suckered in. Added a few bits to the 911 (as much power as possible then as good a tyre as I could, no weight reduction) and managed to get her around in 1:53.358. Trouble is that the splits said I was on course for a 1:52.9 before I made a mess of the Luffield corners at the end. I have a sneaking suspicion that Hop's right and the FCY cars are going to be faster...

Still, as they say, a change is as good as a rest  :)

I made a dino last night for this challenge it was build with full slicks full weight reduction full tire width done all engine mods except turbo and it was still about 50bhp short

I then took off one set of cams and the upgraded engine block and put on a stage two turbo brings the power to 399bhp

I then went over to the tuning shop and went with the tune from my b class dino with a few tweaks

This car seems to be on rails on my second lap of tuning first flying lap i got a 1.51.8xx
I then got a invite from hoplee and managed a 1.52.0xx in the race theres a 1.50 in this car for sure

Im going to try something from the U.S tonight probably the shelby but dont think ill keep up with the dino
