LMMS: On the way back, Laguna style.
« on: January 08, 2008, 08:07:39 PM »
[Suzuka 5:00PM Mon.]

Drift: Herb, you've been eeriely quiet this week. What gives?

Herb: This was just not my week. Japan, hmmph. Four cylinders are too quiet. You were hot lapping girl cars. And I don't eat fishbait.
I can't wait to get back to do some good old pushrod V-8's.

Drift: Well, you get your way this time. Bloozer just gave me the go ahead to set up some track time for the crew at a track they have been wanting to work on. So break out the shorts, were doing this the Cali way.

Herb: Oh great. We're going to Cereal land. Bet Gary's happy.

Drift: You bet. He's already made reservations at the hotels, restaurants, and clubs. He's got his connections working overtime. We might be heading out of this one with parts and/or sponsorship this week.

Herb: Let's just hope that we can use these parts on track this time. I wish you could get rid of those 22's out of the shop. They're so loud, they make my head hurt.

All right, the Late Model Muscle Series is heading to Laguna Seca this time.

Good timing!  My crew at JEi was just packing up an E46 M3 for some hotlapping.  Looks like I can actually make a case with the sponsors this time!  Expect the old CTS-V, a new CTS-V, and something new.  (Viper, Panoz, IS430?)

This should be good!
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

Let's start this one off with a couple of times.

Camaro SS
88.505

Not bad but not as clean as I can be, but....

Monaro VXR
87.796

The best I ran from the last one is starting off very quickly.

EDIT: These two used the old rules, have not updated them yet.

I have no idea if this is a realistic goal or not but I'll give a free car of your choice (well  no unicorns) to anyone that can get one of these in the top 1000.  Currently that would be a time under 1:25.970.  Bored at work I looked through the top 1000 and didn't see any of these cars in there.  There is one G35 but that one has been eliminated for this challenge.

Had to start sometime and since I am a lowly class B driver, what better way than to test all of em from the top of the list.

Runs were made at Regional Championships/American Class A Regionals/Laguna Seca 6 laps.
All were prelim builds with mostly the same idea as I usually do.
Mostly grip and then add HP. Default tranny 1-6 gears with best guesstimate on FD.
All cars had the same camber experiment.
All had the default ARB # raised 50% with no change to default Springs/Rebound/Bump.
Brake bias 47%/105%.
Aero was 50% of initial default value
No assists.

Shelby GT500          xxx.xxx/9:22.585
Mustang GT             89.919/9:10.106
Cobra R                   89.516/9:09.384
Challenger Cncpt       88.986/9:07.343

More testing to follow. Saving replays of each run for further review.
I was really surprised with the Challenger as it's the heaviest but that car mounts a serious stock pawprint of rubber.
Lines up #2 behind the Cobra R in the games sorting routine of these A850 cars.

I had to dumb down the AI as they were just bumpin the snot out of me on starts.

I have only touched the 86 range in FR cars, and certainly not heavy beasts like these ones. Laguna is one of my favorite tracks though, and I'll try my best ;)

Edit:
Panoz Esperante: 86.835
420HP, 3000lbs, Michelin slicks @ 275 F/R, max downforce.
Had a bit of trouble with poor turn-in, so I went with equal size rubber front and rear... but the best fix was nudging the brake balance forward. The toon is something like 58% springs with 55% dampers, 12/12 ARB. The rear end sticks pretty good, but I'd still like to be able to pound it a bit harder, I can probably take 4-5 tenths off my time if I get the toon perfect.

I've got a Lexus SC430 lined up as my next contender. It's got a lower starting PI so I might be able to give it better rubber, not particularly fond of the Michelins :)

Nice job with the Panoz Ske.  I tested a Panoz I had already built out for a prior challenge and I couldn't break the 90 second barrier with it.  I guess that car needs a complete overhall or maybe I do.  I then tossed the lowest pi slicks and all the platform bits on a Viper (there really isn't any pi left for much else that puts it at A846) and took it out with the stock tune and easily ran some mid 89s.

Some more times:

Lexus SC430: 87.467
500HP, 33xx lbs, Bridgestone slicks @ 255 F/R, max downforce.
Tuned it with big turbo and race cams for a bit more range, might rebuild the engine and try again but it wasn't promising. Too heavy, too little rubber, understeery and twitchy under power. Needs a miracle.

Dodge Challenger Concept: 86.815 (with a -0.385 after the corkscrew!)
426HP, 3001 lbs, Hoosier slicks @ 285/295, max downforce
Could just barely fit this car in with stock rims and stock driveline - it's 1 lb away from S851 ;D. Best handling car yet, but it feels a bit heavy and I wish for more revs. Rear end has a tendency to wander a bit, but there's no real understeer so I can play around a bit. Time was set using default ARB/Spring/Damper settings and just a slight FD tweak, so this one's definitely promising. If any car here can hit the 85s, this one can!

That is a very nice time with the Challenger Concept Ske (and I'm also impressed that Shyner has it as his fastest car). If you guys knew how many times I've run that online in B Class just because I'm determined to win at least one race in it. The only time I was on course the batteries in the controller died :(

It won't be tonight, but I think the dragon may be due another run :)

Testing continues, still all prelim similiar toons.
I'm off to work right now.....>

Charger     90.920/9:16.886
Viper        88.506/9:05.055

The Charger was not a surprise as she's the heaviest beotch... could tell when she had a head of steam and had to "WHOA NELLY" 'er.  :)
The Viper, much like the Cobra, seemed VERY CONSISTENT in it's lap time.  Might be the already "stock" rear downforce.
I really didn't have hopes cause there wasn't a lot(any) of room for upgrades to the motor.  SURPRISE SURPRISE!  ;D

I'll be pulling out the chrysler crossfire for this one, maybe a couple others.  Right now i'm racing A-Class in my missile stingray, so it might be a little bit.

I managed a 89.864 with the Camaro SS but I know I have at least a second or two left in it.
