I crack my window in the winter while I play, and the house has central air in the summer.  My game room is never over 70 ambient.  The 360 sits vertically on a ventilated shelf with at least 12"+ clearance on all sides.  I've never had additional cooling, but if I did it'd have some sort of dust filter added too.  Dust is like warm insulation to electronics.  I also try not to play more than 4-5 hours at a time without shutting down and letting things cool off.

It sucks that we have to go to such extremes just to play a game.

My PC gaming rig gets similar treatment.

Fit - That wasn't the Nyko Intercooler you're using was it? I've heard very bad things about that - namely that it's trying to force air in the opposite direction to that which the fan inside the 360 is forcing it. So, not only are you making the Xbox work harder to power the intercooler (and as a result making it get hotter), but you're also ruining the airflow through it and so encouraging heat build-up. No wonder it only had one star last time I looked on Amazon!

Hate to dig up an old topic but no need in starting a new one.

Last night I fired up my trusty Arcade Xbox and find that instead of the welcome chime of boot-up and a single green light I was greeted with the flashing of 3 red lights and nothing on the screen.  *sigh*

I don't even remember how to go about getting it fixed.  Guess I should call tech support and get them to send me an empty box.

Way back when, a long long time ago I bought the Arcade box to feed my need while the normal one was out getting its hardware upgraded.  That means I have a spare and a new power cable thanks to Dirt.  It took a little while to update the spare box and get it back online but I managed to get a little game time in on Forza and Skyrim just to be sure all of the updates were in place.

I'm still leary of the box since it has been sitting unused for a long time but so far so good.  Only issue is the color is WAY off.  I spend almost as much time resetting that as I did installing the spare box.  I have my fingers crossed that this box will last a while.  I'm not in a position to have 3 xbox's in the house specially if one is broken.

I don't know that it's worth getting repaired if it's going to cost you anything out of pocket since you have a spare and it's old tech at this point. I would be tempted to just get a slim. From what I've read you could get the 4GB model and reuse your current hard drive to save a few dollars. You just need to move it from the 1st gen enclosure to a new enclosure which are available for less than $10

I'm considering replacing my 2006 era refurbed unit because I'm starting to see odd behavior and I don't want to risk losing my game. Since the last dashboard update I can't get a video signal on about 5% of the bootups. It's also locked up a couple times in the dashboard, and once loading Forza. Reboot and it's fine. Last week I got an E66 error when I left Forza and went back to the desktop. That error is only supposed to happen with a modded Xbox, which mine isn't.

My Xbox is about 6 months old. My son got a shiny new 250 GB from Santa and now with Cloud I don't have to worry about losing saves so I am good. Sorry to hear about your Xbox.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Your box is on the threshold of doom. Those failed boot-ups are harbingers of death.
For a couple of c-notes you can get a current generation box that is pretty much proven RROD free. And you should be able to transport all your stuff. Of course you know that, having done the cloud thing and other tech stuff (I'm following your blog). ;)

That really sucks you lost another one.  I remember when I bought mine (2007ish I think) that I read up on everything online and went looking at serial numbers on all the boxes in the store until I found one that had a particular upgrade that was supposed to go a long way toward preventing RROD.  That particular upgrade had a name but I can't remember it now.  Mine is also an arcade box with a hard drive upgrade.  No problems so far . . . <crosses fingers and knocks on wood at the same time>.

I just yesterday moved in to xbox #3. My first box red ringed. My second box started freezing up trying to move from race results to continue, the video and audio would freeze for any where for 30 seconds to just under a minute.  The new box is a 250GB its black and has every thing built in to get on line.         All so got a deal on a one year Gold membership for 30.00 dollars so now I can get my butt kicked by a bunch of little kids. :-)  The new box is a bit smaller over all, it all so runs very warm and that bothers me so I put a small fan positioned on the side blowing air into the box

That was just the little bit of pressure I needed to convince me to order a 4GB Slim and a disk enclosure for my existing hard disk. I would have done this sooner, but paychecks have been few and far between over the last 6 months.

The last time I sat an Xbox on its side it destroyed a game.  Ever since that unfortunate day I have laid them flat.  Maybe that's the issue I'm having.

Mine is laid flat but sits on a laptop cooling pad that blows air against the bottom. It's powered by the USB port on the Xbox.  I don't know if it helps much at all, but it was something I already had stuffed in a junk drawer.

I used to run an intercooler but I found that it pushed more debris and crap into the box than I thought it would.  I had to pull it off every few days and clean dust bunnies and cat hair from inside the mini fans.

Now it sits much higher on a newer entertainment center so adding a fan may be an alternative to standing it up.
