The RROD claims another victim...
« on: December 01, 2007, 11:37:29 PM »
Well folks, looks my console has told me, in no uncertain terms, to take a break. Last night it froze on me and upon rebooting, I got the infamous red ring of death. I let it cool overnight, unplugged all of the non essentials, etc but alas, another 360 has bit the dust. My first 360 lasted about 3 months before starting to lockup on COD2 and this unit made it about a year and a half before dying completely. With all the many hundreds of hours put into Forza in the months since it's launch, I can't be surprised. I was hoping to have it last long enough to guarantee me that I would get a replacement with the new Falcon processor but, I don't think that the warrany replacement units being issued now will have them since they're still not that easy to find in the brand new units. I think that I will at least get an HDMI unit which will be nice to go along with my HD-DVD drive but, I'll have to get an HDMI switcher since that will put me over my TV's available input limit.

Speaking of my TV... you know that you have an addiction to Forza when the HUD indicator in the corners of the screen for 'place' and 'laps' etc, are starting to become burned into your big screen and yet you refuse to disable them or reduce your racing time. It's probably good that I take a break now because I really should get another certification exam under my belt before the end of the year and I wouldn't have voluteered to give up my Forza time for that otherwise. I wake up thinking about suspension tuning and spend more time at work thinking about Forza than about my actual job so, the next few weeks are going to be hard on me.

My biggest fear is that some day I'll fire up my console, the hard drive will crash and all evidence of my 360 lifetime will be lost. I really wish that LIVE! would give us a way to backup our game saves. Even if we had to pay to do a restore, I would be happy to pay extra for that piece of mind. Never under estimate the value of a disaster recovery plan! Since sadly, that is not yet an option, I did begin to document car build and setup information a few weeks ago so that I would have something to fall back on if the worst does happen.

I wish that the unfortunate demise of my 360 had held off for another couple of weeks as I am very close to accomplishing a couple of personal goals in my Forzalife but, C'est la Vie. In the meantime, I'll still be lurking about around here and will probably get a lot more accomplished both at work and at home!

At least my TV will finally get a well earned rest.

Oh man, that is tough...

I have 3 of the things in the house right now.  I am currently using an elite but I have 2 others slightly used and in their boxes.  One goes to the grandson for Christmas.  The other stays in a box and hopefully never has to leave it - but should the Elite crap out on me, I got a stand by.

I need to cut down on the Forzacating myself.  Just can't seem to do it.  Addicted...  :(

Forza and Cigarettes.

I hope you get back online fairly soon Jay, or at least the hiatus is not too long...

Sorry to hear it.  Hopefully your replacement will come quickly.  What are your certification exams for?

I would love to have a standby, a Walmart 29 day buy/return is tempting but, my conscience won't let me do that and it's just not in the budget right now.

That's one of the reasons for the cert. It would be an MCSE exam which I need to move up a pay grade.

If I had three consoles hanging around Blooze, I'd be really tempted to go for the triple screen Forza setup. I'm always getting emails from TigerDirect that have cheap refurb HDTVs on sale.......

Hopefully , I will have a replacement console and be back in action in time for Christmas!

Oh man, sitting in between three of those things, xBoxes and HD Screens would be like sitting in an oven.  I don't know that I could hack it.

What are the backup possibilities for the HD? Is there a way to save everything off to cover the case where catastrophic failure occurs (like MS returns a repaired unit that is virgin)?

The backup plan in that case would be to not send the hard drive when you send in the 360 for repairs.  Not sure if there is an actual way to do a backup.

I just got mine back about a month ago. The instructions say remove all peripherals. That way MS isn't responsible for memory loss. I guess the removable memory is a lesson learned for the first XBox.

I'm not sure that the HD can be backed up. There might be a way, but I haven't looked into it.

It would have been nicer if ti was like the mem in the PS3. A notebook HD that is removeable and non-propriety.

Hopefully Jay, it will be back pretty soon. I got mine back in three weeks from when I ordered the coffin. They sent me another. Its not as cherry as my first one. The on/off button is a bit beat on. Must have been a kid's.

Actually I have a little anomily now. I can see the shadows of the cars going under the overpass on MV rev on the top. I hope this one craps out before the warranty runs out again. Its starting act like the other one. Fan cutting on and off.

Yeah, unfortunately the others are right. This is currently no way to 'backup' a HDD. It was possible earlier on but, due to concerns over copying profiles and cheating, the loopholes have been pretty well plugged. That's why I wish that Microsoft would provide a legitimate online backup/restore service. As of now, when a console repair is necessary, you keep your HDD safely at home with you and connect it to the new console when it arrives allowing you to retain all your game save information.
If the HDD itself goes bad, your toast. Of course, Microsoft claims that instances of HDD failures are very rare but, it would be just my luck that it will happen to me.

The new 120GB drive has a 'transfer' kit option but, its a one way deal and can't be used to make a copy. Only one storage device may hold an active profile at a time. Now if you had some warning, you could transfer to the new HDD before the old one failed but, that would be dependant on some good fortune....

Well, the 'coffin' arrived at the house yesterday so , last night, I got her all packed up and ready to drop off at the ups store on my way home from work tonight.....

I decided to hookup my original Xbox and take ol' Forza out for a run ( something that I hadn't done in about 9 months ). I had it all together again but, it wasn't turning on. I fiddled with the circuit breaker unit on the end of the power cable that Microsoft had sent out to everybody due to the fire concerns ( boy doesn't this sound familiar) but, it kept on tripping. I unpluged it from the console and it tripped. I took it off the surge protector and plugged into the wall and it still tripped. The bloody thing hasn't even been attached to the console for almost a year and its gone bad! I did manage to find another cord with the correct plug shape and fire up the console but, two things came to mind....

One: Boy do we have it good with Forza2! Both graphics & sounds of the game and the physics engine itself seem like cartoons compared to what we have now.

Two:2nd 360 console failure ( prone to overheating issues ). Went through 3 wheels before getting a fourth one where all of the functions actually worked properly and it has a 'recall' for potential overheating and fire hazard. Original xbox power cable replaced due to potential fire hazzard and now the replacement cable has failed....

Well, at least I have Microsoft to thank for some job security in my IT position. If their products weren't such a mess, I wouldn't have nearly as much to do.

I'm just glad that, so far at least, they haven't figured out a way to make Windows start a computer on fire.

I had thought about firing the old OxBox up and running Forza 1 for the P2P tracks and to check some car stuff and it occurred to me just what you said there.  Forza II is just too much improved in all facets - Forza I would be a mess.  A guy might as well go back to Sega GT...

;D

LMAO @ starting a computer fire...

UPS tracking shows that my old console reached the service center at 10am on 12/12. I called 4MY-XBOX on Friday night (12/14) and they confirmed that they had received it but, gave me standard speech about 10-14 days before return shipping. That pretty much put an end to my Christmas spirit.

Still don't understand with a technology company like Microsoft, why there is no ability to go online, login, enter a service request number and get an update instead of sitting on hold for 20 minutes.  :(

I think Lucas Electrics had a monopoly on that position with all those British sports cars.

My premium xbox died August 1st at 8 months old.  The first time I sent it in, I got email updates and could check status online.  I bought an elite rather than wait it out.  I received a brand new xbox based on the manufactur date on the unit, but it was DOA with no video output of any form.  When I got that one replaced in October, I got a remanufactured one from June 2006.  The second time around I got no emails notification and the status online was never current when it worked at all, but that was during the launch of Halo 3 when XBL was continually flaky.
