B Class Tsukuba NSX
« on: October 28, 2007, 07:40:14 AM »
So, Blooze goes and sets us this here challenge to get a twisty-build NSX, and paint the thing as well. And so I tootle off down to the garage and all my NSX's are built up for one thing or another apart from the old 92 Honda which is sitting at the back gathering dust and feeling sorry for itself (I could have sworn that it was crying but that was just the A/C expansion overflowing). First job, having got it out of the garage was to hand it over to Brian for a quick lick of paint:

That done, it was time to do some upgrades. I've been wanting to try out my formula for a starting point for a RWD twisty build on a mid-engine since I stumbled across it with the Mongoose Barracuda and this seemed a perfect opportunity. And with the build complete, it was time for a test - a bit too much heat on the outside of the tyres meant a bit more negative camber, other than that I was very happy with the way the car drives - braking oversteer, understeer adjustable with the throttle and a nice stable feel through the corners with a back end which doesn't want to overtake the front (unlike that Shelby I was driving a few days ago). End result was the build below - as I said I'm pretty pleased because Tsukuba is a track I struggle to find the line on yet here I was able to run consistent mid-58.5's once the tyres were warmed up. And so, onto the build:

Upgrades:
Power: No upgrades
Handling: All race, except no weight reduction
Wheels: Avon slicks, Oz Gemini (Classic) rims, stock rim size and width
Aero: Forza front and rear spoilers, Forza rear bumper

Tuning (F/R)
Tyres: 29/29

Caster: 5.3
ARB's: 13.74/19.77
Springs: 352.9/467.5
Ride Height: 4.0/4.0
Rebound: 7.9/9.5
Bump: 4.0/4.8
Aero: 125/281

Great Paint on the car Spiney / Brian! :)

I heard a couple guys talkin' down to the Daylight Donut shoppe just this morning that some dipshit from the Rainbow Coalition was wanderin' around town looking for your shop.  It seems they want a picture of your car for one of their campagnes.  Anyhow, one of the guys told the Rainbow coalition dude that your shop was conciderable East of us here.

"How far East?" the guy asked?

Ole Ray says, "Well, ya get in yer rent car there, and ya head South on 75 until you get to US 44 and then head East.  Stop when ya get to a really big chunk of water and give us a call.  We'll discuss further instructions from there."

So he fill's the little rental Ford up and heads out for Tulsa and the connection to US 44.  We made sure he had the phone number of the Donut shoppe before he left...

Now we got this big piece of white cardboard tacked to the wall in the Daylight Donut shoppe.  It's all set up with times and places.  You can buy a square for a buck a shot.  What we are guessing is how many days till he calls and whether he will be calling from the Mississippi River, the Ohio River, or the Atlantic Ocean.

I will have to review my '92 build.  I tried to save some PIs for Engine pieces.  This challenge is presenting a pretty interesting condition, hilighting it if you will.   I am headed back to the garage to put the stock engine back in it and mount some slicks - gonna see how it turns out.

In terms of upgrades, I tend to divide them mentally into 3 categories: power, weight and grip. As it turns out, the 92 Honda NSX has just enough PI to use all the grip upgrades apart from tyre width but if you do that then you can't do any power or weight upgrades (as you can see from the build).

As you'll probably also have noticed, I'm running softer suspension than normal (i.e feuerdog tune) and compensating with stiffer ARBs. The idea here is that I can get slightly more bite out of a corner but without losing too much through the corner to body roll.

As for the paint, most of my paint jobs don't work. I like this one, even more so because there's only 8 vinyls on it (plus the SST logo) so it didn't take long. I'm lazy like that see... :D
