Around the World in... an Old Goat??!
« on: November 13, 2011, 12:05:46 PM »
First Man:  What you doin hangin' out with an old goat like that?
Second Man:  Don't you go disrespectin' my Car!!
First Man:  I was talkin' to the Car...

I got this letter the other day from the FSRA headquarters.  In it they explained how American Muscle cars were pretty much the rage all over the world and because of that, the FSRA was looking to expand Internationally.  They have a tour planned for the SS cars to travel to all sorts of tracks both in Europe and Japan and have a series of races with their National C Class sports cars.

They said if I wanted to be a part of the tour, I could pick one car and 2000 lbs of parts and tools that would fit in an 6' x 6' x 6' container, and then get my passport in order and what ever shots and stuff.  They said a tour of Japan was first, with races at Tsukuba, Suzuka, and Montegi.  Suzuka would be first.

I decided, "What the hell", washed the bugs and stuff off my '65 GTO, and then went to get organized with the FSRA folks.

1965 Pontiac GTO

They said they were going to supply the tires and other consumables.  So I loaded up a tool box, and bought a couple Carb kits, and a bunch of spare electric parts that were peculiar to the Pontiac, and got me and the car out to the West Coast.

So, here's how it went at Suzuka...
Suzuka GP -
151.903
Suzuka East -
60.988
Suzuka West -
95.372
Total
=
308.263

That's a top 500 aggrigate and a One Percenter.   Not too bad for a couple old goats...

Next is Montegi.

Things are goin' pretty good.  I'm crappin' regular, which is relief.  Travelin' usually binds me up somethin' fierce.  Only got one problem.  I started carryin' a fork and spoon in my pocket - I just can't get the hang of eatin' with them sticks.

Listen, try to stay away from those drift guys out on Kaido.

And go easy on that sake, at least at first.

Sounds good Blooze.  If I had to pick a home abroad it would be Suzuka.  Love that track and every ribbon it has.  Back in the online days I would run stock Dodge Chargers around Suzuka East to lear the room of anyone not willing to play around a bit.  Got pretty good at navigating American Iron around the twisties.

I may have to look into airfare for the Trans Am or the 442 and give you some company.
Go sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Heh, there is no Kaido in my Forza World.  What we have is Cottonwood Pass - it's just North of town.

You needn't worry about me gettin' tangled up with Sake.  I tried it once when I was in the Navy.  There's about as good a reason as any for becoming a T-Totaller.  That stuff taste's horrible.

I noticed there were a couple of those containers weren't loaded and there was room for a couple more cars.  Check with the FSRA guys.  Maybe you can hook up with the PR campaigne and save the airfare...

You inspired me to run the three Suzuka's with my Nova.  It's C class but not quite to FSRA standards as I have the front aero on it.  Was able to just eek into the top 200 with it though.  I think I may try to finish off all C class tracks with this on car but we'll see how far I get.  Cottonwood Pass huh...

That is where I'm headed with the GTO - all the circuit and p2p tracks.  I'm trying to really focus on driving the car.  My 65 GTO is about perfect.  It may not be the fastest, but it sure is fun to drive.

Heh, I've been coming up with names to move some of those Original tracks so that my crusty old fart character doesn't have to fly to get to them.  Camino Viejo is another one.   Only Camino Viejo is a resort in the mountains in the Southern part of the state - near Monte Vista...

Just wrapped up a tour of Suzuka in my Pontiac Trans Am.  Seems those boys don't take kindly to Pontiac's.  Something about a Goat eating the grass, I'm not sure.  Pulled off some sweet times, very close to the FSRA log book times for all of the ribbons.  Ended up with a few dents in the left side quarter panel and a broken headlight but that's about it.  The Hyundai's just don't launch like the 'Merican cars do.  Only issue I had was catchin up with the buggers before the end of a 6 lap race.  Had enough time to pull over and crack a soda open then get back to it with no problems.

(I had a great lap going on 4 of 6 at the GP track but I decert'd a 151.396 by drafting up on the last place AI)

Here's the break down from the score sheet they handed me on the way out.  Off to Motegi to see how she fares.
Suzuka GP - 152.609
Suzuka East - 60.694
Suzuka West- 95.228
----------------------------
Grand Total - 308.351

Heh, yup!  And the other olde goat was leakin' oil on the posies...  ::)

I don't have much trouble with any of them really.  (I run Hard)  After two or three laps they are usually out of my way and I can shoot for a lap time.  But the Esposito guy, the one with the phony Italian accent.  (His accent gets really thick when there's women around, but the other day after I sort of squoze him off the track on the West race, he sounded plumb American when he called me a Coke Smoker, or something to that affect.)  I think he has an inferiority problem 'cause he knows his car ain't nothin' but an English taxi.  He keeps calling me "Nascar" and tellin' everybody that all my car is is old.  "It's just noisy and can only drive in circles"  he says.  "How you say it?" he asks while wiggling his finger, "roundy round?   This is real racing," he brags, "We have to turn both directions and use our brakes in this League."

Well, I been kickin' his butt real regular, but he hasn't backed off.  But he isn't hangin' around where I at much either.  What is a real hoot is that when we looked at the itenorary for Montegi, there was a 20 lap race on the Twin Rings Speedway.  I wiggled my finger at him and winked when they announced that in the driver meeting.  Boy, I am going to kick his ass!

And I did.  Here's how it went at Montegi.
Montegi GP -
142.955
Montegi East -
102.301
Montegi West -
44.884
Total
=
290.140
Montegi Spdwy -
45.779

Sacrilege I know, but I like running on the Montegi Speedway.  Unlike Sunset and the Test Pad, you actually have to drive the Twin Rings.  And if you are having any handling issues, turns 3 and 4 will catch you out in short order.  You get the idea of what the NASCAR guys mean when they talk about "rotating thru the middle"

Anyhow, I'm back at the house for a week or so.  I got the design for the new Number panels last week and Jack got them cranked out on the machine the other day.  He hung a set on the GTO and then ran it over to the barn and the spotlight that he has set up for the purpose and took a picture.

I wondered how the ole gal would take it, but she looks kind of proud.  Chest all puffed out and head high... "I'm a Race Car now!"  she seems to exclaim.

Yes you are hon... :)

Next, the word is that we are headed for England and the Silverstone track.  Three different ribbons there.  But, while we are there they are going to be doing some PR crap over on the airport thing where TopGear is produced.  That ought to be fun...

:D

PS: and I promise to get more pictures...  :-\
