Muscle Inc. and Excel
« on: September 22, 2007, 09:37:13 AM »
It keeps popping up.  We've been discussing it down the Shop, it's damn near impossible to do this game without some means of keeping records.

Now we have a couple open ended challenge projects that pretty much require Excel to track the process, I am considering updating an attached spreadsheet as a means of keeping "score" or track of the Snake Tracks and the RWT Hot Laps.

[aside] Guys that want to be involved in either the Mongoose Challenge or the Hotlap Challenge need to send me a FR so I can get you all on a list and help monitor the goings on.  We don't require leaderboard verification, but in this case, hitting the leaderboard is the point of both excercises... [/aside]

So I'd like to get some sort of Idea how many and who all has what and can do what with Excel.

I think the 3 options are self explanitory.  It'd be nice if you would explain your selection, like I said, so we can get an idea about what sort of software we can use to pass information around.

I have posted this here in hopes of catching traffic that is headed out to various rooms and doesn't necessarily check any of the others, like the BBB Shop, specifically.

Thanks for your participation...

I have MS Office Pro 2003 and can deal with most any xls, doc, or mdb file.

If need be, I have access to the latest and greatest Visual Studio .Net (I work primarily in C#) and SQL Server so the idea of a small client server app using Access is not out of the rhelm of possibility.

I also have about 350 Gig of storage here, and an Unlimited amount on the net "MegaUpload" - it's a pain, but it can be used for distribution.

I can use spreadsheets, but manipulating data with them is something new to me. I wrote my first formulas for the Jaguar. I have to say I did impress myself a little, all these little boxes doing the math for me!

those that have something that can read excel (that are not excel) , will probably have 'limited' read and write capabilties.
i.e. if you keep things simple then the likes of open office should work, but you would have to limited yourself to simple formulae and formatting. VBA and certain conditional formating are rarely handled (or done well) with excel 'compatible' spreadsheets.

might also be worth looking at 'google docs' which features a spreadsheet and also allows collaboration.

I have excel sitting here and can do basic commands (add, subtract, sort, transfer to other sheet) but don't ask me to start doing enything complex. At the moment I just use it for keeping track of my times and seeing what does well where.

I've not really put a lot in for FM2 yet as I'm still working through Career. One thing I did try with FM1 was to run a standard deviation on the times. The theory was that it wouls show whether the variation on a specific track was more due to car or driver. I think I proved my theory as to which tracks are more dependant on car but I'm just wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on that. (sorry for hijacking the thread Blooze, but it was something that I wouldn't have thought of if it wasn't for the spreadsheet).

No problem Spiny - However, I do have a thread for just that sort of thing going down in my shop... you might post it there - could be interesting to work up something like that for FM2.

I'm an Excel Whore!

Excel 2000 is my favorite version, so that's what I've got, although if I'm too lazy to switch my KVM over to my PC (or fire up my emulator) I sometimes use the Mac Excel (which is absolute horseshit, BTW).

I'm familiar with the formula junk I've used, but I'm sure there's a thousand cool things I don't know.  I'm very good with VBA in general, but have never used it in Excel.  I'm a Gemini.

I've got MS Office 2003 on my desktop and OpenOffice 2.2 on my laptop.

I am very familiar with Excel as I have to use it every day at work.

I have limited experience with Excel, but I can't work with them simply because I don't have Excel or an equivalent on my pc.  I really should look into finding something that will read and allow me to use .xls files though.  First I need to get a new t.v. because the sound went out on the old crappy one I was playing on.

I use Excel at work everyday.  Programming in VBA is not my favorite thing to do, but I have been doing it daily for about 4 years running.  I whipped up a quick worksheet to bbcode export macro this morning for a scoreboard I'm running over at Exodus this morning.  I was planning on doing the same for ALS if I get time, but that one with all DD's strange manufacturer points, is going to take a bit more thought.

If we do a little thinking about how we lay this thing out, we should be able to keep a bbcode table up to date without much trouble for those that can't or don't wish to view the spreadsheet directly.  Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I deal with the basic excel stuff... and have no problem doing basic stuff.  I'm sure I could do the hard stuff, but I'm too lazy...

As for compatibility... I'm running office '07 ( :'( ), so I can deal with Word, Excel, PPT, etc.  BTW:  Office 07... well.. don't get me started.  The ribbon sucks.

I can also get RSSes.

While we're at this:

I can do both

Excel works for me.  I'm already using some of your scoreboard sheets.

Bump in hopes of getting some more input - for the folks who have opted that they have no Excel access whatsoever, would you please leave some sort of comment concerning the reason for your choice.  Perhaps one of us has a solution, or it will help us to come up with a solution that you do have access to...

Right now I'm just using a word document to hold my tunes.  It atleast makes it easy as pie to copy over to forums and emails, lol.

As of now I'm just jotting my stuff that I need to keep track of in an old sketch book.  I'd love to be able to afford Office, or if there's a free equivolent I'd consider that.  Anyone know of anything?
