Alright...I've decided I need help with this. I've seen the key wheels and stuff, but for some reason it just doesn't get through to me. What are some progressions and what type of scales are used to get from one to another?

I strongly suggest you check out Howard Goodall's series "How music works" - it's very interesting indeed. It deals with Melody, Harmony, Rhythm and Bass separately in four hour-long episodes. If you're a bit internet savvy I'm sure you can find the whole series in full quality
The "Harmony" episode deals quite a bit with chords and progressions. Here's the full episode, split into 5 clips on youtube.
