Cooper S: If it weren't for the speedo in the middle of the dash I would vote sub-zero. But that's way more distracting than the energy usage display on my wife's Prius. Especially so since those cars are way too fun to tear around in.

OK, so Bimmer has a sub-zero version, Larry's held back by the instrument panel (sort of)....and I'm still on the fence.  Any other votes?

I'll jump in and say the Cooper S is cool...

I don't think any FWD can quite get into thje Sub Zero catagory, the Mini and the Abarth 500 are both close though... Actually I've just thought of one... well 3 actually, The Alfa Romeo Brera, Spider and the GT... all FWD all very cool cars..  8)

I don't think anyone's mehtioned Aston Martin's yet? I think they all have to go in Sub Zero  ;)

I gotta agree with comments on the Boxster, "I wish I had a 911" sums it up pretty well, same goes for the Caymen as well I think.. Also the Cayenne is just ugly as hell, is there a rating lower than Seriously Uncool??

I think Caterhams should be be put under the cool catagory as well... Ok so they're a bit harsh and don't have any creature comforts but i'd love to take one for a blast down a country lane or round a track..  ;D

Extra smokey.... now with no assists!

I think the Caymans are cool, honestly.  And with a 911 motor, they'll outrun a 911...

Sorry to dissent, but I find MINI's seriously uncool (then again, my cool status is probably on a par with the original Captain Slow/James May so who am I to argue). Granted it's a good car, but that doesn't necessarily make a car cool. And there's just sooooo many MINIs around these parts that whenever I see someone I wonder if they ever had an original thought in their whole life (to paraphrase Sheryl Crowe ;) )

To me, a cool small FWD car must do it's job well, and ideally say bah, humbug to styling cliches. It shoudl also not be overpriced - if it looks like the car was bought for it's style alone then to me it becomes powerfully uncool (the epitome of that thought is the new Beetle) Now I know that the Fiat 500 comes into the category, but I feel that it became the exception which proves the rule once they priced it on a par with similar sized and specced cars. If it had been priced higher than similar cars (like the Mini) then it would have become uncool.

As for candidates, my first would be a Fiat Panda 4x4.

I know it's not FWD, but it is a rugged, cheap 4WD which can go places a lot of the "soft-roaders" (i.e. Honda CR-V and the like) would fear to tread. Usually you would say that small French cars are by definition cool too, but one look at the current Peugeot and Citroen line ups makes me want to bash my head against a brick wall. So, my only French candidate would be the Renault Twingo.
http://www.renault.co.uk/cars/model/newtwingo/product.aspx

After those two, I'm struggling. Over here at least, it seems all the car manufacturers are trying to make their small cars cool. And by trying so hard, it seems to me that they are failing miserably.

The Mini isn't that common over here.  You see a few, but not too terribly many of them.  This is similar to the Lotus/Vette phenomenon, though there are still plenty of Minis around.  I did notice something interesting yesterday, though.  Among my fellow grad students that showed up to play football, three drive VW's and one drives an older M3.  I would have felt as if I were in pretty cool company if not for my buddy's Tahoe right there in the middle, cramping our style. lol

Spiny that post made me laugh.

I think the Mini should be sub zero, old or new.  My wife has one and there is no other car I would rather her have. It is more fun to drive than anything I have ever touched, including the Elise and Caterham which were blasts.

I live on a small island with nice twisty roads and at the weekend I put my hat one (so not to be recognised) and nip down to the shops in the mini taking the long route.  I drive about a thousand miles a week in my Beemer tourer and it is such a relief to get out and try and make the little mini loose traction (not an easy task).

Also agree on the Cayman.  i would love on of those Cayman S's.  also a big dan of the Noble sports cars.

As for the Aston Martins, "a car for fools".  Spend that amount of money and then spend as much in minutes sat on the emergency lane of the motorway waiting to be towed. I must see one every two weeks. (uncool)

My old man says I am a car snob, after heavily mocking his recent cars. A Cit Berlingo and Nissan Note, nuff said (seriously uncool).

Spiny, do you have the Honda Fit over there?  If so, any objection for putting it in the seriously uncool category just for its ads?

Yes, but nothing more beautiful has ever graced the breakdown lane.

I think they're cool.. also we can use Bimmer's post again...  :D

Honda Fit can go in the seriously uncool section... also the Peugeot 1007. Its meant to be a small city hatch but they fitted a hugely heavy and gimmiky electric sliding door so its slow and also far too expensive..

Also I think SMART cars should go in the uncool catagagory, they fall into the same trap of being far too expensive for what they are... at least the Mini (though I agree they are overpriced) has one saving grace in that its a blast to drive..  ;D

Maybe I should have used the quote function.  That was exactly what I had in mind!  lol

I think the Aston is a situation in which familiarity breeds contempt.  Aside from the occasional Jag (the Brits will make fun of me if I say jag-war, the official American pronunciation) or Mini (I know, owned by BMW...), we don't have a lot of British cars over here.  I think if we throw in the one guy in Chattanooga and one in Orlando who drive Lotuses and a Range Rover that I must have seen at some point, that's every British car I've ever seen in person.  We don't have TVR.  I couldn't even find a single one on Ebay available for sale in the US.  We have Aston Martin (I saw a couple at a car show, but I'm not counting that), but I'm not sure I've ever seen one on the road.  TVR's and Astons may be dreadfully unreliable.  In fact, I'm getting the impression that they are.  However, that's not really the point of the cool wall.  If I had known they existed when I was six, I would have had a TVR of some sort on a poster on my bedroom wall.  In fact, if I see one, I might get one for my office now.  So, verdicts from the arbiter of all that is cool (tongue firmly in cheek there...)

TVR:  Cool.  What model, you ask?  As far as I know, they don't make minivans, so whatever you've got with a TVR badge on it is hereby declared cool.  I'm not going to award them Sub-Zero status, at least in part because it's so terribly uncool of TVR to go out of business instead of expanding to the United States.

Aston Martin DB9: Cool.  The DB5 isn't in production, so the DB9 benefits from the "Bond Car" coolness.

Mini Cooper:  Even those who say it's overpriced, other than spiny, admit that it's a fun, cool little car.  Everyone doesn't have them here.  I might agree with Spiny if I were in Britain, but I'm not, so I don't.  I don't think I can put it in Sub-Zero, an area I'm basically reserving for those cars that go in without any hesitation whatsoever, but yeah, it's cool.

Smart Car:  The coolest Smart I've seen had a Hyabusa engine in it, and looked like a blast as the driver drifted it around what looked like a cul de sac or outdoor basketball court.  The regular one, though, has even been poked fun at in literature for being uncool (DaVinci Code, though I turned off the movie before I got to that point, so I don't know whether a similar comment is made on film).  I'm with you on the uncoolness of them, assuming they're stock.  I can't go seriously uncool, though, because some people do insane things to them and post the evidence on youtube.

Just saw a piece on the (presumably previous gen) Fiat Panda on Top Gear (season 3; I'm plodding through the back catalog and really am enjoying it).  It seems it doesn't fall apart when looked at too hard, and is perfectly serviceable.  As for the 4 x 4 version, my issue with it is the 60 hp.  I'm sure they'll give it more power if it comes to the states (wonder whether it would be seen as a wrangler competitor, despite having about 1/4 the displacement), and I could certainly see it being fun with 150-200 hp.  I'm going to withhold judgment on this one, since I'm really not that familiar with it. (As an aside, it seems like 5th Gear is trying to be Top Gear.  I'm assuming lots of others have noticed this.  Is it a spinoff?)

There is, however, an American off road vehicle that needs to be part of this discussion: the Jeep Wrangler.  When I worked in finance, I remember spending hours trying to find a value for a Jeep that we were considering loaning money against.  I looked in 4x4's, and it wasn't there.  I looked in SUV's, and it wasn't there either.  After a few tries, I finally dug it up under sportscars/convertibles.  That was a bit frustrating, but it illustrates the coolest thing about a Wrangler.  It's got a big muscle car engine (4.0L, v8 at the top of the range, IIRC?), 4wd, towing package, handles great off road, and has a convertible top.  It may corner like a drunken giraffe on roller skates, but it'll tow a proper sportscar to a race weekend, drop it off, then go play in the mud.  I really think it's the best of both (all?) worlds.  What do you think?  Cool?

Soooooooo many comments following thoughts during the day so this is going to be a mammoth post.

But first, a bit about 5th Gear. Basically, when the original Top Gear got cancelled, virtually the entire cast decamped to Channel 5 (hence 5th Gear) and started the programme again in almost exactly the same format. The current Top Gear was launched afterwards and is essentially a new programme with an old name. That's why you'll hear reference to "New" Top Gear and "Old" Top Gear.

Mini Cooper S (new, not old): I'm not decrying the abilities of the car, but to be cool ability is not enough. The trouble for me is that around here there are so many that about 99% of people driving are trend followers rather than trendsetters, ergo the car must be at least uncool, maybe even seriously uncool. I can see the Fiat 500 achieving similar status in a few years as there are already quite a few about, but for now it seems there are few enough that it is mainly the trendsetters who have them.

Fiat Panda: Yes, it does only have 60bhp, but to focus on power is to miss the point. Basically, you are looking at a tiny little car (thing Chevy Aveo size) which you can drive almost anywhere. At school, one of my friends had the original 1980's version and I can confirm that that really did go everywhere - we once drove it across the proverbial ploughed field to try and get it stuck, and failed :D But, that car rusted away in under 10 years - the moment when another friend pulled the seat up without using the proper lever and ripped up a large part of the floor put the final nail in the coffin. OK, it's slow on road, but it has to be cool (or sub-zero) just for the fun and go-anywhere factors.

Smart: Seriously uncool. Yes, it's small and can be parked where other cars can't, but would you really want to drive one?

Other suggestions: Citroen Berlingo - Cool.
http://www.citroen.co.uk/new-cars/citroen-berlingo-multispace/media-gallery/360-exterior/

Yes, I'm disagreeing with Kev on this one. i know it's a converted van and is making absolutely no attempt to be cool. But, that is what makes it cool to me - by driving around in one of these you're sending out a message that you're someone who doesn't need a super-stylish car to look good. Instead, you've gone for a cheap, spacious, tough car which is a decendent in spirit of the Citroen 2CV - it's the sort of car you could imagine a French peasant chucking 3 sheep in the back to take to market. The Renault Kangoo is similar, but not cool on quite such a level to me.

Land Rover Defender - Even more so than the Jeep Wrangler, it's barely changed in 60 years of production. No compromises, it will take you almost wherever you want to go whatever the terrain. Those looks may not have changed, but like the Porsche 911 have matured with age. While other 4x4s may cosset you at the expense of off-road ability, the Defender is built for the British farmer to carry 10 sheep in the back ;D. You rarely see one which isn't used off road, so you know it's been bought for a purpose, not to create an image. To me, this one is sub-zero.

Honda Fit - This looks a lot like our Honda Jazz which is the process of being replaced. Believe it or not, i think your adverts are better than ours!
