That's good schnitzel, y'all:Nurburgring
« on: December 30, 2008, 05:36:07 PM »
It's a calm day.  Fndr is pushing a car to the limits on a twisty mountain road.  He's been doing this since he was 16, but this time, it's just a little different.  It's a Charger, and it's the most feared track in the world.

Doc:  Good job.  Just keep it on the track, and you'll drop a few seconds.

Fndr:  I got it, Doc.

Doc:  Watch the karrusel, man!  It sent you off last time.

Fndr:  Don't worry, the second one's easier.  I can take it in third and still keep the revs up.

Doc:  Nice.  Just keep at it; you're doing fine.  Try to break 9 minutes.

(silence for a few minutes)

Doc:  9:03.  Bring 'er in, and we'll take a look.  Telemetry's showing some tire heat issues.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my current personal challenge.  The ring has been a personal nemesis for me.  Since we're running an enduro there, I figure I had better get my ducks in a row and learn the track.  I can also knock some time off my hotlap rank while I'm at it.  I'll be sticking with the high-power cars, since those are generally my weakest anyway, hoping to kill two birds with one stone.  I dropped 18 seconds at the Ring in D, going from 9:21 to 9:03 in a charger today.  I had forgotten just how much fun the S^4 cars can be.  Sliding around the ring was a hoot.  Kinda makes me hope we've got an S^4 challenge in the near future.  Anyway, I'll be using this thread to update my progress.  It'll probably just get sporadic updates, but it should be a fun project.

That's good progress (was the 9:21 in the Charger too?) I'm sure you'll get below 9 minutes before too long. It'll be interesting to see how you do on this - certainly of the 3 random 'D' cars I have times for on this track the Trans Am did best beating the 2000GT by 11 seconds and the '07 Civic by over 15! Muscle seems to be the way to go on this track, provided you can keep it on the island.

Good luck!

The 9:21 was in a D-class S^4 Chevelle.  Well, I THINK it was S^4.  I know it was a chevelle, though.  Funny thing is, the Charger beat out the chevelle because of driving/handling, not top speed or hp.  Driving the Charger around the ring was a hoot.  I love powering the old muscle through the corners, just kinda sliding the tail out to get around.  I really love D-class!  I think I'll call the D-class phase done if I can get under 9 minutes and go on to C, possibly running another charger.  I don't know whether to go for extra grip or more top end, though. If I can control the beast on S^4 tires, I'm thinking this might be one way to teach myself to drive a proper missile car (still assist-free, save for the line).

Spanky's Speedshop Superstock Series.  That's the D-class spec for the Muscle-Inc cars.  Basically, upgrade a tire width (exception:Challenger) and put all the adjustable race suspension bits on, including rear aero.  It tends to produce pretty good cars for open rooms.  You can slide through the corners without scrubbing too much speed, but they're still controllable.

Ah, thanks for the clarification..  Obviously, I haven't run that spec much, if ever.  Man there's far too many ''round tuit'' ideas floating around the ole' noggin...

We've only run it as a challenge 1 1/3 times (if you count my multiclasser a month or two back).  Really fun spec for online racing, though.

Poor, poor chet... I still don't think he's recovered from what we did to him way back when.
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

Yeah, that challenge had one of the better storylines, too.

Would there happen to be a link to that?  I'm always up for a good read, and I really miss those in-depth storylines.

^^linkage^^

Be warned, it's 19 pages.

I miss the really in-depth storylines, too.  I'm hoping those will be reborn as traffic increases if/when (OK, when) Forza 3 comes out.

Okay,   I gave this a go in The Spinsters Trans Am. It was so frustrating. 1st lap out I had 1min 20secs of penalties.  why does the game has to keep adding penalty time when you are parked in a hedge facing the wrong way?

next lap not so bad, but despite being very careful still ended up spinning off in dramatic fashion.  think it ended up as a 9:40.

3rd and as I decided final lap ended up a 9:04. I managed to stay away from all penalties until near the end. I didn't even go off road, just took a jump too hard and got a penelty for it. It would never of happened to The Bandit.

What class were you in?  I'm pretty sure I can get under 9 minutes in D, but it would take a flawless lap.  Even when I manage no penalty time, I still end up screwing up and losing a lot of speed in a couple of places.  I still haven't gotten the karrousel (sp?) just right.

Kev - I take it that I am the Spinster?

If it gives you something to aim for I got an 8:46 out of the Trans Am, but I think a sub-8:45 should be possible if I'd run more than 4 laps in the thing. You're right about it being a tough car to drive around here though - you have to be consistently adjusting the throttle as that's what I ended up steering with - all the steering does is tell you which directiom to go in but not how much you turn :)

just thinking about it... interesting that there's a roughly 2:30 difference between A and D class here.
